Professor Jarmo Suominen specializes in mass customization strategies, user innovation concepts and customer experience management processes and tools. He is working in these fields as a professor and a private consultant.

Professor Suominen conducts Mass Customization research at the Aalto University A! (the former University of Art & Design), Helsinki, where he is the director of Future Home Research Institute.  He is studying the engagement process and customer behavior within the interaction with high-interest and high-involvements products and goods.  By addressing the existing research paradigm from activity theory to behavioral sciences and product concept creation methodologies professor Suominen will also develop further current design paradigms in architecture.

Jarmo Suominen’s current interests are focused to transform production driven architectural design to user centered industrial design and product creation process. Current projects are addressing various layers in the process of developing and constructing new mass customizable buildings, communities and areas. By understanding challenges in design, manufacturing, marketing and selling processes there is an opportunity to develop models for more customer driven ways for designing, manufacturing and selling buildings.

Jarmo Suominen is developing mass customization strategies for companies in the media, construction and service sector. Current research is focused on configurable high-interest, high-involvement products and services. One of the research programs is the 24 Living Research Program with 5 industry partners. Objective of the program is to develop mass customizable offerings, identify relevant value networks and engage user innovation process to the offering portfolio.

Since 1999 Jarmo Suominen has been working in Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT as a visiting scientist in MIT Media Lab and a visiting scholar in the Department of Architecture. Professor Suominen has started the 24 Living Research and Development program with MIT House-n in January 2007 (a 3 year program) to address the holistic demand in multidisciplinary and value networked context. Proposed research will go beyond the user demand by addressing the desire of customers in housing. The project will develop the hypothetical supply using hybrid organization model as a straw man, and ultimately generate solution concepts for mass markets.

Jarmo Suominen is the owner and a Principal Consultant of Suominen Consulting. Consulting commissions focus on innovative and customer driven design, manufacturing and marketing processes and strategic planning in various scale; from furniture design to city planning.

Jarmo Suominen is the owner of Suominen Architects Ltd, an architectural practice since 1991. He has won numerous prizes in architectural competitions in Finland and in Europe and held several art exhibitions in Europe.

As a director of EcoDigiCity Ltd Jarmo Suominen has been developing sustainable and technically highly advanced city concepts and design manuals for especially Chinese markets.

Jarmo Suominen is also a Senior Advisor in Ogilvy One Finland and Taivas Group, part of the WPP one of the world's leading communications services groups. He develops multi channel customer experience and communication strategies for Ogilvy Taivas Group.
